The Role
of the Accompanist

ACCOMPANYING THE PARISH VISION STATEMENT

The liturgical music accompanist plays an essential role in the fostering and development of the parish vision and embodies the liturgical ethos and pastoral skills expected of the other leaders of liturgy.

Although a level of musical proficiency and artistry will be obvious to the assembly, it will be obvious as well that the minister uses that skill and artistry for the advancement of the liturgy and the leadership of the ministry, not for the purpose of self advancement and performance.

When working with a choir, the accompanist follows the direction of the choir director. When accompanying a cantor, the accompanist is in sync with the cantor who is leading the sung prayer of the assembly.

When leading the congregation, the accompanist is always aware of the unique needs of each assembly, and adjusts to meet those needs.
